Elizabeth Juckes: a tribute

It was with great sadness that we learned of Elizabeth’s sudden death at the beginning of December. Elizabeth was a staunch, loyal and energetic member of the Burford Singers for over thirty years, and could be relied on to help out in any way necessary.

When the Burford Singers took on their current incarnation in 1987 with Brian Etheridge as musical director, Elizabeth took over the role of rehearsal accompanist, and was assiduous in getting to grips in advance with whatever we were rehearsing – she always liked a challenge. She continued in this role until Brian Kay took over the musical directorship in 2002, when she transferred to the soprano section.

When we rehearsed in the Methodist Chapel, Elizabeth would arrive early to open the chapel and help set up. She also helped move the chairs before and after concerts, a thankless task which she performed with her usual energy and cheerfulness.

But most of all we will remember Elizabeth for her enjoyment of music-making, be it at the piano or singing. There is no doubt that the Burford Singers was an important part of Elizabeth’s life, but the Burford Singers also owed a great debt to Elizabeth for her unstinting support and friendship. We will all miss her, especially when we can finally sing together again, and grieve that she will not be with us.
