Farewell to the Methodist Church

Methodist ChurchIt is with great sadness that we recently had our final rehearsal in Burford Methodist Church, after holding our Thursday evening rehearsals there for the last 32 years, which amounts to more than 90 concerts. When Brian Etheridge took over the choir in 1987, and enlarged it in order to perform the standard choral repertoire, we began to rehearse in the church, which was conveniently next door to the Burford Gallery, which Brian owned and lived in.

We have fond memories of the church: in recent years the smell of curry emanating from the restaurant adjacent; in the far past the smell of melting rubber in winter rehearsals as people inadvertently rested their feet on the hot pipes under the chairs with the old heating system; wearing coats when the heating failed; watching the progress of the moon across the eastern windows on clear nights; rehearsing ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Iolanthe’ and the St John Passion in the basement. The memories are myriad, and we are grateful for the years of hospitality provided by the Methodists of Burford.
