Joyce Lang, 1922 – 2019

We are sad to report that Joyce Lang, former conductor of the Burford Singers, sadly died in April, just a few weeks after her 97th birthday.

Joyce conducted the Burford Singers when it was still a small group of about 16 voices. She always maintained a high standard, and introduced us to a wider variety of more modern music to add variety to our concerts. Under Joyce’s guidance, we made a recording of some songs, and regularly performed at the Chipping Norton Festival, as well as in halls, churches and outdoor venues in the surrounding area.

Joyce was our conductor and Director of Music from 1980 to 1986 and conducted about 23 concerts. She was also conductor of Cirencester Choral Society from 1982 to 1990. In 1990, the Burford Singers and Cirencester Choral Society joined forces to sing the Bach B minor Mass and gave joint performances in Cirencester with Joyce conducting, and in Burford with Brian Etheridge conducting.

Joyce was the much-loved oldest resident of Windrush village. There was a Celebration of her life in St Peter’s Church, Windrush on 24th May.
